Everybody should have an iagometer – a running total of the number of Iago-like people they meet along the way from cradle to grave. Sort of like the accumulation of gene mutations, except measuring damage to the psyche rather than the tissues.

When big old Redwood trees are cut down or fall, a cross-section can be drawn relating the rings to historical events. Seems to me you could do a cross-section of a human brain and mark it similarly for events in their life.

All western countries at all times have had some fascists, all that varies is the proportion and visibility. All western countries can potentially be taken over by fascists given the right circumstances and a conniving media.
