Tracks and Traces

We like to visit
places where the famous
have lived, worked, fought,
thrived, died.
Like to imagine we are
walking where they walked
sitting where they sat
seeing what they saw.
And not just the famous
but places of our own
family\’s past.
Here a grandfather was born
there a great-grandmother died,
over this way a farm once owned
a garden once tended,
and here, touched by my hand,
a chair once used,
a box once valued,
a photograph once treasured.
One day will others,
family or not,
seek out the places I have known,
try to imagine what I felt,
experience some small
part of my life
which I experienced whole?
