Reading about D-Day the 6th of June 1944 again to mark the 80th (!) anniversary. The initial stages featured paratroopers and gliders. These planes were full of professional soldiers who had spent the previous two years getting supremely fit and training with equipment. Many of the gliders and transports were hit by flak and simply exploded killing every one of the occupants. Later in the day the same thing would occur with landing craft full of equally highly trained soldiers.
Remonds me of the observation that it doesn\’t matter in life how good your diet is, how many bad habits you avoid, how fit you become, a cancer exploding in your brain or lungs will kill you just as quickly and certainly as it would the most unfit and unhealthy person.
Not sure if there is a moral there…
