Below the horizon

Throughout history, as times change, people, grumblingy, mostly change with them. Some eagerly, some reluctantly, some trying to resist for as long as possible, some who will stay put until they die. Oh, and always a few lunatics bravely marching full steam astern led by demagogues (usually religious) who convince them that the age before the age before last was the Golden Age they should return to. On average though, like a great ship changing course, the progress of human civilisation inches forward.

These days though are the first in which a very large proportion of the population of the planet are heading backwards as fast as they can towards medieval times and onwards to the Dark Ages, spurred on by the fifes and drums of religious leaders, political leaders, and the Press. For the first time the average is not taking us forward but backward, and it feels much like being dragged over the event horizon of a Black Hole with no possible return.
