End of the road

September 30, 2019September 30, 2019 by nomdeplume707, posted in Bon mots, cancer, literature, poetry, Uncategorized

Old age is

like walking through

a Grimm forest

in a dark night;

branches whip

the face; unseen

carnivores roar;

pits give way

underfoot; trees

fall with a crack;

and somewhere

ahead on the path,

waiting in the gloom,

is the slough of despond

a dog’s tail

Lost is lost

Unheard footsteps

echoing in halls;

unglimpsed eyes

peeping round doors;

unseen tails

wagging with joy;

unspoken barks

welcoming home.

Some reptiles

became birds,

some reptiles

City mouse, country mouse

It seems to me

that living in a city

must damage the

human spirit

from the outside,

as much as cancer

damages the

human body

from the inside
