Just one more lap

Two catastrophic fire danger days in a row is one too many (well, two to many really…). You can psych yourself up for one, ticking off the hours, wearing out the Fires Near Me App, reaching 6pm with a big sigh of relief, but having it all to do the next day (today) again is hard to build up toughness for.

Something like the sequence Cancer-Chemo-Side Effects-Surgery/Drugs-Cancer …… You can psych yourself up for one of those sequences. Being told the Cancer is back really makes you grit your teeth to go through it again. The third time … all out of grit. No matter how much encouragement – just 6 more cycles, just 7 more side effects – you get from those wishing you well.

A bit like the Olympic Marathon where the runners cover several hundred draining miles and reach the cheering crowds in the stadium only to discover they still have to run the lap around the stadium before finishing. Come on, say the crowds, just 400 metres to go, you can do it. Tell that to Dorado Pietri in 1908.
